Rejoice and Praise

Reflections on faith, hope, and the quiet journey with Christ

I sit in the fresh quiet of early morning, the world still asleep, and try to drink it in. Yet here come the black flies — whizzing, darting, drawn to my blood like tiny uninvited guests.

Yikes. I swoosh them away, muttering, “Let me sit in peace!”

Then I laugh at myself and pause. Do I reach for the OFF and ward them off, or try to make peace with these little creatures too? All things are made by God, each with its place in this wild, intricate ecosystem. Even these pesky ones.

Deep in the woods, not a peep can be heard. Not a soul in sight. My husband and the dogs are still snug in the camper, wrapped in sleep. It’s just me, the morning dew, and the tall trees standing watch.

A city girl at heart, I’ve escaped the noise for this — the sweet, simple delight of being alone with the freshness of the day. I sip my hot coffee, letting its warmth settle into me, and smile.

Hmm… except for those little pests.

Still, they are God’s creation too. And so I breathe, perhaps give in and spray a little, then sink into this lazy morning routine and give thanks. How good it is to be here — bugs and all.
