Reflections on faith, hope, and the quiet journey with Christ

There is a simple beauty in hearing the Lord’s Prayer through the language Jesus himself would have spoken.

The words are direct and deeply human: bread for our need, forgiveness, guidance, deliverance. They speak not only of our dependence upon God, but of the ordinary needs and vulnerabilities we all carry.

I used this rendering of the prayer to create Bread of Our Need, a quiet song with minimal accompaniment. I wanted the music to feel ancient and uncluttered—to leave room for the prayer itself.

For me, there is something about its simplicity that brings me closer to the humanity and humility of Jesus, to a time when he walked among ordinary people and taught them simply how to pray.

It is an ancient prayer, yet our needs have not changed very much.

Perhaps that is part of its enduring beauty.

Bread of Our Need

[Verse 1]
Our Father who is in heaven,
may Your name be made holy.
May Your kingdom come,
may Your will be done,
as in heaven, so on earth.

[Chorus]
Yours is the kingdom,
Yours is the power,
Yours is the glory
unto the ages of ages.
Amen. Amen.

[Verse 2]
Give us today
the bread of our need.
Forgive us our debts,
as we have forgiven
those indebted to us.

[Chorus]
Yours is the kingdom,
Yours is the power,
Yours is the glory
unto the ages of ages.
Amen. Amen.

[Verse 3]
Do not bring us into trial,
but deliver us from evil.
Our Father who is in heaven,
may Your name be made holy.

[Chorus]
Yours is the kingdom,
Yours is the power,
Yours is the glory
unto the ages of ages.
Amen.
Amen.
