Reflection on 2 Peter 3: A Call to Persevere in Faith
Reading 2 Peter 3 late one night stirred something deep within me. It took days of prayer and reflection to fully grasp its weight. Watching Ralph Martin’s episode from Renewal Ministries, Has the Hour of the Church Arrived? (https://youtu.be/oqFbLxlOwcM?si=Fq9JYaT9OvyX5edA), helped crystallize my thoughts. His words resonated with my growing unease about the secular influences creeping into our Catholic Church. As I reflected on my spiritual journey, I began to see how Peter’s warnings speak directly to the challenges we face today.
Several passages from 2 Peter 3 (RSVCE) stood out to me. Peter urges us to remain steadfast in anticipation of Christ’s return, even as scoffers mock the promise of His coming:
“Scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own passions and saying, ‘Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things have continued as they were from the beginning of creation’” (2 Peter 3:3-4).
Peter counters this doubt by reminding us of God’s faithfulness:
“For they deliberately ignore this fact, that by the word of God heavens existed long ago, and an earth formed out of water and by means of water, through which the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished” (2 Peter 3:5-6).
Just as God judged the world by water in Noah’s time, so too will He judge it by fire at the appointed time. Yet, Peter emphasizes God’s mercy and patience:
“The Lord is not slow about his promise as some count slowness, but is forbearing toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance” (2 Peter 3:9).
He adds, “With the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day” (2 Peter 3:8), underscoring that God’s timing transcends human understanding.
Peter calls us to live with purpose as we await Christ’s return:
“Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of persons ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be kindled and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire!” (2 Peter 3:11-12).
He assures us of God’s promise:
“But according to his promise we wait for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells” (2 Peter 3:13).
My Reflection
Peter’s words challenge me to examine my own faith amid the cultural and societal pressures facing the Church today. I’ve grown increasingly concerned about the secularism infiltrating Catholic life—efforts to conform the Church’s teachings to modern sensibilities rather than holding fast to the truth. Peter’s warning about apostasy and the distortion of Scripture feels strikingly relevant:
“There are some things in them hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other scriptures. You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, beware lest you be carried away with the error of lawless men and lose your own stability” (2 Peter 3:16-17).
This passage reminds me to anchor myself in the Word of God and the teachings of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Throughout history, the Church has faced challenges from societal and cultural dynamics, yet it has endured through fidelity to Christ’s teachings. As Peter exhorts, we must “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18).
For deeper insight, I recommend The Hour of Testing: Spiritual Depth and Insight in a Time of Ecclesial Uncertainty by Father Donald Haggerty. His work offers profound guidance for navigating these turbulent times while remaining rooted in faith.
Conclusion
As we await the fulfillment of God’s promise, we are called to lives of holiness and godliness, vigilant against the errors that threaten to undermine our faith. Let us hold fast to the Scriptures, the teachings of the prophets, the apostles, and the Church, trusting in Christ’s return and the new heavens and new earth where righteousness dwells. May we grow in grace, standing firm in the truth, no matter the challenges we face.
God Bless 🙏💕
