A Stronger Me In My Own Existence

Part I — The Noise of the World and the Still Voice of God

We live in an age of constant noise. Each day brings new headlines, new controversies, and new narratives competing for our attention. Political scandals, global conflicts, cultural debates, and endless commentary circulate rapidly through news and social media. What happened yesterday is quickly replaced by the next unfolding story.

It is not simply the events themselves that capture our attention, but the emotional pull of the narratives surrounding them. Opinions multiply quickly, often before deeper understanding has had time to form. Conversations become charged with reaction and judgment, and the cycle repeats itself again and again.

What I find most striking is how easily many of us—myself included at times—can become absorbed in this constant stream of information. Friends and acquaintances speak passionately about the latest developments, yet rarely pause to ask how these narratives shape our thoughts, emotions, and even our spiritual lives.

Yet the spiritual tradition has always warned about the danger of living entirely outwardly.

In the Scriptures, God is not revealed through constant noise or spectacle. When the prophet Elijah searched for the Lord, he encountered wind, earthquake, and fire—but God was not found in those dramatic forces.

“After the fire came a still small voice.”

Book of 1 Kings 19:12

God’s voice appeared not in the noise, but in the quiet.

This passage feels deeply relevant in our own time. The world is filled with voices competing for attention—media narratives, political arguments, speculation, and endless debate. Each claims urgency. Each calls for immediate reaction.

Yet while we are absorbed in these outward storms, something more important can quietly fade: our interior life with God.

Jesus himself warned about becoming overly anxious about the affairs of the world:

“Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.”

Gospel of Matthew 6:33

When our attention becomes consumed by the noise around us, we risk losing sight of this simple yet profound instruction.

Perhaps one of the greatest challenges of our time is learning when to step back from the noise—long enough to hear the quiet voice that still calls us inward.

“Be still, and know that I am God.”

Book of Psalms 46:10

Closing of Part I

Learning to step away from the constant noise of the world is not always easy. The voices around us are persistent, and the pull of endless narratives can easily capture our attention and our emotions.

Yet the spiritual life gently invites us to move in another direction—toward stillness, discernment, and a renewed awareness of God’s presence.

The question then becomes: how do we remain spiritually centered in such a noisy world?

In the next reflection, I share some simple ways that help me keep my focus on God amid the distractions of daily life.

Series: Listening for God in a Noisy World

In the first reflection, The Noise of the World and the Still Voice of God, we considered how easily the distractions of modern life can pull our attention away from our interior life with God.
