Some prayers never grow old.
Among the oldest is the blessing God Himself gave to Moses for Aaron and his sons to speak over the people of Israel. These words were first spoken as God’s people journeyed through the wilderness—a place of uncertainty, hardship, and dependence upon God. Before leading them onward, the Lord gave them a blessing, assuring them that His presence would go with them.
The Lord said to Moses:
“Tell Aaron and his sons, ’This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them:
‘The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.’
So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them.”
(Numbers 6:22–27)
What a remarkable gift.
This is not simply a beautiful farewell or a poetic wish. It is God’s own blessing, given to His people. The blessing reaches its fullness in the final words: “They will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them.”
In Scripture, God’s Name is never merely a title. His Name reveals who He is—His holiness, His faithfulness, His mercy, His protection, and His abiding presence. To have God’s Name placed upon His people is to belong to Him and to walk under His loving care.
Today, thousands of years later, this ancient blessing remains a beautiful prayer for our own lives. We can pray it over our spouses, our children, our families, our friends, our churches, and even over ourselves.
When we pray:
“The Lord bless you and keep you,”
we entrust ourselves to the Father’s care.
When we pray:
“The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you,”
we ask to live in the light of His mercy.
When we pray:
“The Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace,”
we ask for the peace that comes from His loving presence—a peace that remains even in the midst of life’s wilderness.
The wilderness has not disappeared from the human journey. We still encounter uncertainty, suffering, loss, and seasons when the road ahead is difficult to see. Yet the same God who blessed Israel continues to bless His people today.
May we never hesitate to pray these ancient words, trusting that the Lord still places His holy Name upon those who seek Him, and that His blessing is ultimately the gift of His own presence.
