Traditionally, this prayer was prayed for wealth and success, and I do not wish my reflection to take that away from anyone who prays it that way. I have carried this prayer since childhood, and for me it has become a prayer of spiritual growth. For me, territory is the reach of my life — the space where God’s light can become visible through my words and actions. When I ask God to enlarge it, I am asking Him to widen that reach, and to keep His hand on me, so I do not lose sight of the One whose light I hope to carry.
1 Chronicles 4:9–10 (Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition):
Jabez was more honorable than his brothers; and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.” Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, “Oh that thou wouldst bless me and enlarge my border, and that thy hand might be with me, and that thou wouldst keep me from harm so that it might not hurt me!” And God granted what he asked.

Enlarge My Heart, O Lord
A Prayer for God’s Light to Reach Beyond Me
Heavenly Father,
Bless me, O Lord,
not only with what I need,
but with the grace to recognize
what You have already given me.
Enlarge my territory, Lord,
not for wealth, power, or recognition,
but so that Your love may reach
beyond the boundaries of my own life.
Open my heart to those I encounter.
Widen my vision to see where I am needed.
Let my words bring encouragement,
my hands offer kindness,
and my actions reflect Your mercy.
Let Your hand remain upon me.
Guide me through the movements of my heart.
Give me wisdom to discern Your will,
humility to recognize my weaknesses,
and courage to follow where You lead.
Protect me, Lord, from temptation,
from pride disguised as goodness,
from selfish desires that draw me away from You,
and from the sins that wound
both myself and others.
When I stumble, lead me to repentance.
When I grow weary, strengthen me with Your grace.
When I lose my way, draw me back to You.
May every blessing become an opportunity to serve,
every gift a responsibility to love,
and every encounter a chance
to make Your presence known.
Lord Jesus,
let me never seek to enlarge my influence
without first allowing You to enlarge my heart.
And wherever Your light may shine through me,
may others see not my greatness,
but the beauty of Your love.
Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
