A Stronger Me In My Own Existence

Lk 10:38-42

Jesus entered a village
where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him.
She had a sister named Mary
who sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak.
Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said,
“Lord, do you not care
that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving?
Tell her to help me.”
The Lord said to her in reply,
“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things.
There is need of only one thing.
Mary has chosen the better part
and it will not be taken from her.”

My Humble Thoughts

Mind provoking verses for so many reasons. First I see myself as Martha who is anxiety filled and busy making sure all is perfect for her beloved Jesus. Secondly, I am at times also like Mary who can sit there for hours on end reading or meditating on the word of God.

I think theses two traits exists in each of us as we love and serve Jesus. There is a time for both in our lives. There are those moments when the profound word of God just leads us to dig deeper to understand and satisfy our mind. There are moments when we just savour the word of God and let it sit in our heart. This is when I sit in silent adoration. On a recent camping trip, there was a calmness in my soul as I just sat there looking out into the woods thinking about how beautiful God’s creation is.

There are times when I feel like Martha. My focus is on tedious things around me that I can’t sit still. I get anxious and stressed out worrying about this and that. Just as Martha is outwardly making sure all the food and setting is perfect. I too get caught up micro-managing and being on top of the situation – control.

Giving up being a control freak is all a part of knowing oneself and letting go to give Jesus my implicitly trust.

God Bless, and don’t sweat if there are moments when you feel like a Martha. Knowing oneself is all a part of letting go and giving our trust to Jesus.
